Product Review: Miso Mayo

Miso Mayo three flavorsThe folks from Miso Mayo were kind enough to send us some samples of their delicious alternative to mayonnaise. Miso Mayo is exactly what it sounds like, mayonnaise made with miso paste. It’s non-GMO; has no dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten or sugar —here are some additional food facts on it—; it has a huge VEGAN on the front of the bottles—we love that; and it comes in three flavors—Original, Spicy Red Pepper and Garlic ‘n’ Dill.

To test these three yummy flavors out I made sandwiches, a salad dressing and some delicious, fancy-pants, tortilla chip appetizers (recipe below) with the pickles from my Farm to Market review (coming soon). The three flavors worked great in everything I made. It added a bit of umami (Japanese for “pleasant savory taste”, in a nutshell), which just gave everything a nice flavor boost. In my opinion, Miso Mayo seemed to taste lighter than other mayo products but, in fact, it does have the same amount of calories and fat as the leading vegan mayo. It also does not taste anything like mayo, it has its own taste.

Mauro and I liked the Garlic ‘n’ Dill flavor the best. It had the most flavor, not too garlicy, and worked well as a dip. I also diluted it with some rice wine vinegar to make the salad dressing (pictured above), which tasted great on the salad. The Spicy Red Pepper had more of a red pepper flavor and was mildly spicy.

The only con I found was with the nozzle at the top of the bottle/tube. I actually think the nozzle is convenient, especially when making the appetizers or quick sandwich, but the lid doesn’t make an air-tight seal so the product smelled up my fridge. No biggie, though. A little piece of plastic wrap between the nozzle and the lid fixed that issue.

Fancy-pants Appetizer “Recipe”

Ingredients:

  • Tortilla chips (I used a plain organic, low salt, yellow corn chip)
  • Guacamole — homemade or store bought
  • Chipotle Lime pickles
  • Spicy Red Pepper Miso Mayo
  • Chopped chives, cilantro or parsley for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Set out the tortilla chips on a serving plate or platter
  2. Smear some guacamole on each ship
  3. Place a slice of pickle on top of the guac
  4. Squeeze a dollop of Miso Mayo on top of the pickle
  5. Garnish with herbs
  6. Nomnom away!
